Emily and Mr. Neil

Verse 1

Up before the break of dawn. Mister Neil puts the coffee on
And standing by the dirty dishes, fixes up some sandwiches
And he packs the things he knows she likes
‘Cause Mr. Neil knows just what Emily likes
And Mr. Neil smiles

Verse 2

They met by chance while fishing on the Gulf near Destin Bay
It caught him by surprise how she took his breath away
As Emily burst laughing from the sea, spinning rainbows in the sun.
And Mr. Neil smiled

Refrain

They shared a lunch neath an open sky while up above the sea birds cry
And Mr. Neil smiled
And Emily, she danced in graceful turns spinning rainbows in the sun.

Verse 3

He told her ‘bout his grandson, Bill, who’s in the army now.
He hopes he’ll soon be safe at home and sound in mind somehow.
Last year he told her when his wife, lost her very long fight.
He wishes she met Emily. Too little too late for that now.
Still, Emily smiled.

Bridge

He’d tell her ‘bout his hopes and fears. He’d tell her ‘bout his plans
She was the only one he ever told ‘bout his time in Vietnam
And Emily had smiled.

Refrain

They’d share a lunch neath an open sky while up above the sea birds cry
And Mr. Neil would smile
And Emily, would dance in graceful turns spinning rainbows in the sun.

Verse 4

Standing on the gas-pump pier, on a desecrated bay.
There was so much more to tell her. He had so much more to say.
Emily would understand, and Emily would dance.
And Emily would smile at him. She’d make it all okay.
But Emily will not be here today.

Outro

I love you
I’m sorry
Please forgive me
Emily
